Coherent was the right call for 70% of our laser needs—but not for everything.
When I took over purchasing at our 400-person manufacturing facility in 2022, laser equipment was one of my steepest learning curves. We needed everything from fiber lasers for metal cutting to CO₂ lasers for acrylic engraving, and a picosecond source for R&D. I’d never bought a laser before, but I knew one thing: the wrong supplier could mean downtime, rework, and a very unhappy engineering team.
After evaluating four major vendors and running six months of side-by-side tests (note to self: always budget time for a pilot), we standardized on Coherent for the bulk of our systems. Here’s why—and one area where we went a different direction.
Why Coherent won our business
I’ll be direct: Coherent wasn’t the cheapest option. Their fiber laser quote for our cutting station was about 12% higher than the baseline bid. But the cost difference disappeared once I factored in what mattered to our engineers—uptime, precision, and support.
Broad product portfolio
We needed three laser types for different applications: a fiber laser for cutting 0.5–3 mm stainless steel, a picosecond laser (their Monaco model) for wafer dicing in R&D, and a CO₂ laser for engraving photos onto wood plaques (a side project for client gifts). Coherent offered all three. That meant one procurement process, one service agreement, and—critically—one vendor relationship to manage (I really should consolidate more of our MRO suppliers). Other vendors like Trumpf had excellent fiber lasers but limited picosecond offerings; IPG Photonics was strong on fiber but didn’t cover CO₂. Coherent’s breadth saved me from juggling four separate bids, each with different terms and shipping timelines.
Deep technical expertise (that actually helped us)
I can’t speak to the physics of laser-matter interaction—that’s the engineers’ domain. But from a purchasing perspective, Coherent’s application engineers made my life easier. When we were deciding on the best laser cutter for acrylic, they didn’t just sell us the highest-power model. They sent a technical brief comparing cut quality, edge finish, and ventilation requirements for CO₂ vs. fiber on 3 mm acrylic. That brief saved us from buying an overpowered system (and, ugh, the ventilation upgrade we would have needed). In my experience, that kind of pre-sales education isn’t common—most vendors just quote what you ask for.
An informed customer asks better questions, and Coherent didn’t exploit the complexity. They explained options plainly, even when it meant recommending a cheaper, lower-powered unit that still met our specs. That built trust.
Ultrafast precision for R&D
Our R&D lab needed picosecond pulses for a thin-film ablation project. Coherent’s Monaco was the only system that met the pulse stability spec on the first try. Competitors could match it—but required field retrofits or additional calibration service (probably fine for a university lab, but not for a production-adjacent R&D schedule). The Monaco ran reliably from day one. The engineers were happy. The VP of R&D told me it paid for itself in saved development time within the first six months. That’s the kind of outcome that makes procurement look good.
A practical note on pricing and maintenance
I’ll share what I wish someone had told me upfront: laser equipment pricing is more opaque than I expected. Coherent’s fiber laser quote included a 3-year service package, which pushed the upfront number higher than a bare-bones bid from another supplier. But looking at my three-year TCO, that service contract was worth it—they replaced two power supplies within the first year (circa 2023), and the on-site response was under 24 hours both times. The cheaper vendor? Their standard lead time for a replacement part was 7–10 business days.
As of January 2025, I track a per-unit maintenance cost across our laser fleet. The Coherent units average 2.3% of purchase price annually; the non-Coherent unit runs at 4.8% (and that gap is growing). These numbers are from my own spreadsheet, not vendor marketing.
The one place we didn’t go with Coherent: CO₂ lasers for wood engraving
This is where the “it depends” comes in. For laser engraving photos on wood—our gift program, not production—Coherent’s CO₂ systems were excellent but overkill. Their smallest engraving-focused unit was priced at $12,000. A smaller specialized vendor offered a comparable unit at $7,500 for our throughput (maybe 40–60 small plaques per month). The trade-off: the cheaper unit had a less responsive support team. But the risk was lower—wood engraving isn’t mission-critical. I ordered the budget unit. It’s been fine for two years.
That decision hinged on context. If we were engraving for revenue, I’d have spent the extra. For a side project with flexible deadlines, the cheaper option worked.
What I’d tell another admin buyer evaluating Coherent
- If you need a fiber, picosecond, or CO₂ laser for production-critical work, Coherent is probably the safest choice. Their support network and breadth justify the premium.
- If you’re in a niche application with low throughput and a tight budget, don’t automatically write them off—but also don’t industrial-spec a solution meant for factory floors.
- Get the service contract. I learned this the hard way: every hour of laser downtime costs us roughly $1,400 in lost production. Two years in, the contract paid for itself twice.
- Ask for references. I spoke with two other facilities using Coherent fiber lasers for metal cutting. Both cited uptime above 98% and praised the technical support. That sealed the deal for me.
Hit ‘purchase order’ and immediately wondered if I’d missed a better deal. Didn’t relax until the first cutting test came back with a clean edge and zero burrs. That was 18 months ago. I’d make the same call again.
